"Grief is not a form of negotiation with Death, it is a courageous, generous and beautiful Love letter to Life". Azul-Valerie Thome On the 1st of December 2018, after 18 months of work&connections, 150 people - adults, children and babies - were gathered in Totnes to create together a Life Cairn on Sharpham Estate : a memorial for the community to honour and grieve species that have today gone extinct due to human activity. In a silent procession, each one carried a stone in their hands. On top of the hill, stones were placed one by one, with the name of the extinct being, and the sound of a bell. The community sang around a fire, men and women wept and grieved together, prayed together, sang together and recommitted to protecting, tending and being attentive to the species that are still living. The Life Cairn in Totnes was initiated by SOULand, as part of the vision of "Making the world of our Longing". The vision is now for a mycelium of Life Cairns to grow around the world, gifting spaces for our human community to welcome the grief of their loss, and the depth of their love for the natural living world and in that way mature a little in this gesture of making amend in sacred wild beauty for what we have done.
